How to optimize rice yield by mitigating the stress effect caused by water stress and temperature changes?

Did you know that water stress can reduce rice yield by 85% and 0.73 t/ha by variations of 1% in the maximum temperature?

Rice yield is linked to water availability. This crop is particularly sensitive to water stress during reproductive growth, even under moderate drought stress (Hsiao 1982, O’Toole 1982). The plant water content is one of the most critical variables to explain vegetative activity and plant productivity models (Boyer 1995). This highlight the importance of helping the plant to maintain a good water level even under stress situations to not compromise its yield.

  • Rice (Oryza sativa L) is a crop that demands a special water management, not only due to the volume need but also due to the critical stages during the crop cycle when this resource is required.
  • Within the different rice production systems, there are some of them where water is constantly provided. But even in those systems where irrigation water is not a limitation, there are other factors such as temperature that play an important role affecting the crop performance. Because of that, the use of biostimulants is essential to ensure the preparation of the plant to face these situations without reducing its yield.
  • The stress caused by temperature and water (lack or excess) are often related. When the plant is under water stress it closes its stomata, this reduces the transpiration rate of the leaves and, consequently, reduces the evaporative cooling and increase leaf temperature. When the climatic conditions present also high temperatures, this produces a double negative effect on the rice crop, strongly affecting its yield. (Berni et al., 2009)
  • The use of biostimulants can help plants to maintain water content thanks to the activation and enhancement of plant functions.

  • Root and shoot development in the rice crop decreases under water stress, affecting the final yield of the plant.
